I'm a junior ad man and I just learned new hires are making nearly as much at I do, straight off. How should I go about getting a raise?

Your boss won’t give you more buck, unless he thinks he’s getting more bang. It’s not professional to demand a raise because the starting salary of those new to the trenches has increased. What have you done that demonstrates you deserve more? Sign any new accounts? Find a savey way to save the firm money? If not, roll up your sleves and get some dirt under your fingernails and try not to take out your frustration on the new guy-it’s not his fault you suck.

How do I keep my new bride from popping into the office?

You could approach this in one of two ways and prevent a fight.

First, keep her busy at home. Ask her to prepare complicated meals, that way she won’t have time to stop by to see you. You may also suggest she join a few volunteer organizations, like the DAR or the Junior League.

Second, train your secretary to interrupt the pop-in as soon as possible. An urgent meeting is always an excuse to shuffle her out of the office and off to lunch. You should also appear busy when your wife comes in. Make sure to finish your drink and freshen your breath before you kiss her hello.
